Ginna Lee

Visible Emotion, 2010

From Seoul, Korea, Ginna Lee holds a BA in Textile Design (2004) and MA in Textile Futures (2010) both from Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, London.

Lee's personal aim is to create abstract visual manifestations of specific emotional moments and states; she has specifically targeted emotions such as pain and sadness. Her aim is to recreate and represent such moments through textiles in the same way that body language and facial expressions are used to represent the internal emotions of humans in order to communicate and express themselves to the world.

Lee intends to utilise her work as a new form of communication, allowing us to recapture the emotional communication that has been lost within contemporary society. Her work reflects various traces of our emotions, both natural and theatrical. Through material she analyses the way in which the sense of touch, body temperature and colour can be explored in order to represent a certain emotional state. By manipulating the organic effect of memory foam, Lee became suddenly able to not only to show human emotion, but also to slow down sudden and fleeting subconscious expression. In "Visible Emotion" she explores the way that memory foam can be manipulated by physical touch and different materials in order to echo a range of emotions.

Lee's work explores and exploits the dancers’ engagement with their costumes and props during the performance. Scenography investigates the way that feelings can be expressed, not only within the body, but through its interaction with various objects and materials as well. It aims to extend the possibilities to express human feelings, beyond our natural behavior. The breaking of line, the folds, the creases in the fabric, all provide an instant visual picture of the dancer’s movement. Here she wanted to fuse performance and textile, seeing how a textile could tell the story of feelings and one’s emotions, as if they are the second skin of human body.
